NHS Trust sentenced for health and safety offence on a non-causative basis following acquittal of Corporate Manslaughter
11th Nov 2025
John Cooper KC and Sandesh Singh represented the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) in a 7 month Corporate Manslaughter trial, which concluded in June 2025.
After the joint longest jury deliberation in legal history, NELFT was acquitted of Corporate Manslaughter but convicted of a health and safety offence.
NELFT was sentenced today to a fine of £565,000.
John and Sandesh successfully persuaded the Court that the health and safety offence was not a significant cause of the death.
This is the third case concerning the prosecution of a healthcare provider in relation to an inpatient suicide in which John and Sandesh have successfully challenged causation.
