Priory Hospital Aberdare HSE Prosecution
John Cooper KC and Sandesh Singh have acted in a prosecution by the HSE concerning the Priory Hospital at Aberdare, which cared for patients with learning disabilities, mental health and behavioural issues before it was closed in 2017.
The case concerned alleged failures to mitigate the risk of assaults (primarily incidents of biting) by patients on care staff at the hospital. One care worker was bitten on the shoulder “through to the bone” and another required skin grafts following a bite to his forearm.
Sandesh was instructed for Park Care Homes (No 2) Ltd., which ran the Hospital. John represented Priory Central Services Ltd., a company which provided health and safety support to Park Care Homes (No 2) Ltd.
Park Care Homes (No 2) Ltd. was fined £363,000 and Priory Central Services Ltd. was fined £40,000.
