No finding of ‘gross neglect’ in Bristol Grammar School inquest

In December 2019, during a school history trip to New York, a 17 year old pupil at Bristol Grammar School collapsed in her hotel room after suffering septic shock and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West hospital.

During a five-day inquest at Avon coroner’s court the Maria Voisin, the senior coroner for Avon,  heard evidence from three experts (two instructed by the family) and the two supervising teachers. The coroner reached a narrative conclusion and said she could not find any “gross failings” by the teachers on the trip. Bristol Grammar School was represented by Malcolm Galloway instructed by Richard Ottley of DAC Beachcroft and the two teachers were represented by Julia Kendrick instructed by Crispin Kenyon of Weightmans.
